The best filters have the most effective filter, so you can get a really good filter and it has the most efficient filtering capabilities, but it’s not perfect, says James R. Ollie, a senior lecturer in environmental health sciences at the University of Queensland in Australia.
The filter’s primary function is to remove water from the water’s surface and to trap dissolved particles, he says.
It does this by breaking down the water molecules to smaller particles, which are then removed by the filter.
It is then passed through a series of filters, which take a different combination of the water molecule types into account, to make sure that the filtered water is safe to drink.
But there are downsides to this approach, too, Olliesays.
A filter that is designed to remove the most contaminants in the water could also make the water toxic to humans, or even harm them.
In a study published in the journal Environmental Science & Technology in 2011, Olliks found that filters made from copper sulfate (CuSO4) and nickel (Ni) had higher levels of mercury than those made from a copper sulfide (CuSS), which has a more neutral composition.
This meant that a filter made of a copper-based filter would be more effective than one made of nickel.
And although the researchers were able to identify more contaminants in filtered water, this wasn’t enough to determine whether these contaminants were dangerous or harmful.
So they tested filtered water against water from a normal tap.
Ollioks team found that the filter’s filter effectiveness was significantly lower in filtered tap water than in water from an outdoor water source, and that these differences were significant enough to cause a decrease in the filter effectiveness in filtered drinking water.
The findings showed that the copper-sulfate filter had the same filter efficiency as a copper based filter, but that the Ni-sulphate filter was more effective at removing harmful contaminants.
The team concluded that it was important to be aware of the potential for harmful contaminants to be in your water before you use filters.
And while Olly believes that the use of a filter is important to ensure you get the most out of it, he warns that you should also use it in moderation.
If you use the filter more often than you normally would, you may be consuming more contaminants, OLLiesays, which could make it more difficult to remove harmful contaminants, or to find the proper filter for you.
And, while he recommends you use them as directed, if you’re just starting out, it’s a good idea to learn how to properly use them and then to experiment.
“It’s best to use them sparingly,” he says, “but you might find that you’re not getting as much out of them as you thought.”
